Jurickson Profar suspension opens door for Orioles trade everyone's been expecting

Suddenly, the Orioles may have a suitor for Ryan Mountcastle.

While spring training injuries to Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg may have given renewed life for Coby Mayo with the Baltimore Orioles, the same can't be said for Ryan Mountcastle. Dating back to the end of the 2025 season, Mountcastle has looked like the odd man out in Baltimore, and there hasn't been much to change that perception. The Orioles were exploring Mountcastle trades at the start of spring training, and the Atlanta Braves may have just emerged as a potential suitor.

The Braves have a Jurickson Profar problem. It's the same problem they had last season when Profar was handed an 80-game suspension for a failed drug test. A second failed drug test this spring has led to Profar being suspended for the entire 2026 season.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. The Braves aren't going to be fooled again. Profar is appealing his suspension, but even on the off chance that he wins, it feels like his time in Atlanta is over. That leaves the Braves short of a primary designated hitter in their starting lineup, and someone who could slide into the outfield if needed.

Ryan Mountcastle could be an immediate solution for the Braves as they look to balance out their starting lineup

Atlanta already lost one potential replacement for Profar when Andrew McCutchen signed with the Texas Rangers, and there aren't many established options available at the moment. Sure, Isaac Paredes is the best bat available on the trade market, but he isn't a roster fit with the Braves.

Yes, it could be wishful thinking for the Orioles, hoping that the Braves are desperate enough to help resolve one of their biggest roster headaches, but Mayo would be a respectable option. Despite his struggles last year, he's flashed real power in his earlier seasons with the Orioles and could be a platoon option at DH for the Braves.

Even if it's not the Braves, it's become clear that Mountcastle isn't long for the Orioles' roster. Mayo's runway on the major league roster should take priority over Mountcastle's spot on the bench if Baltimore reaches a point where both Holliday and Westburg are healthy at the same time. A reality that confirms how redundant the former first-round pick's role is with the Orioles, and as everyone expects, Baltimore should trade him as soon as possible.
