What did he say?

Watching the Baltimore Orioles right now is not as entertaining as it was the last couple of seasons. The pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries. Key arms like Grayson Rodriguez and Felix Bautista are unavailable at the moment, and the offense, normally a strength, has taken a significant step back in 2025.

Thankfully, during yet another lifeless performance from the Orioles against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night, allowed announcer and former player John Kruk to add some terrific color to an otherwise boring contest.

Kruk is known for saying almost anything that pops into his head at any given moment. One only needs to look back at the time when Kruk faced Randy Johnson in the 1993 All-Star Game to see that the former Phillies slugger can be immensely funny.

Phillies broadcaster John Kruk brought some levity an otherwise lifeless performance from the Orioles

The Orioles offense failed to show up against Philly and were getting blown out thanks to yet another rough bullpen collapse. Kruk took the opportunity during the ninth inning to share that he had recently learned how many pounds of pressure it takes to rip off a human ear.

No, seriously. He did.

During an at-bat in the ninth inning, a foul ball clipped the side of the catcher's mask and Kruk was reminded of something he learned during a recent visit to The Franklin Institute — a science museum and education center in Philadelphia. An excited Kruk revealed that it only takes 25-pounds of pressure to rip a human ear off.

If you're surprised that such an anecdote was on a baseball broadcast, you're not alone. Even Kruk's colleagues were obviously caught off guard. He went on to state, "If you can open up a pickle jar, you can rip an ear off." The conversation devolved from there with Kruk joking that one should carry around one of those plastic jar openers to help fend off muggers.

He was obviously joking around, and honestly, baseball broadcasts (especially during crummy games) need more moments like this that allow for lines that you would never expect to hear during a baseball game. It's certainly better than staying completely dialed in on some of these Orioles' performances lately and letting their play speak for itself.
