There are quite a few things that the Baltimore Orioles have done right this offseason. They were aggressive in free agency, signing both Pete Alonso and Ryan Helsley to address pressing needs, and they traded for a high-upside controllable pitcher in Shane Baz. Assuming Baltimore closes the offseason by landing one of the top free-agent starters still available, 10/10, no notes.
It's a scenario that has placed Baltimore at the center of the conversation when talking about American League contenders. It's also one that should allow fans to turn the page from a miserable 2025 season.
Gunnar Henderson could signal a new direction for the Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles need to take their direction a step further. When Samuel Basallo made his major league debut to close out last season, the team wasted no time in signing him to a team-friendly extension. It's something that Baltimore has often been criticized for not doing with their previous core, including Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman.
Bleacher Report recently had a subtle reminder of what the Orioles should do when it comes to Henderson. They highlighted each team's best homegrown player heading into this season, and it's no surprise that Henderson was the choice for the Orioles.
Even in what was perceived to be a down year for the 24-year-old shortstop last year, he still had a 120 wRC+ in 651 plate appearances. And if there was any doubt of his ascending value, Henderson beating his arbitration projection is a sign that his price tag will only grow higher before he hits free agency in 2029.
Now is the time.
The Orioles are slowly shedding the previous reputation that surrounded them. Their extension with Basallo last summer was a refreshing break away from how they previously operated, and they had an aggressive offseason. The final bow on ushering in their new era is signing Henderson and rewarding your best homegrown player for finding success at the major league level.
If anything, it may lead to a clear path to sustainable contention, and not just a flash in the pan like it was in previous years.
