An Adley Rutschman trade should be the final nail in the coffin for this fraudulent Orioles front office

Everything that Mike Elias has done since he took over as the General Manager of the Baltimore Orioles following the 2018 season has been based on the promise of a better future. Stripping the team of all its talent, losing 100 games per season year after year, and demoralizing a fanbase to the point where it never recovered. It had to be done to create the perfect baseball team sometime in the future. The promise of this future baseball team was that it was going to win forever. If the fans just stuck it out through some of the worst baseball in the history of MLB, they would be rewarded with a winning baseball team for the rest of their lives. If the fanbase trusted Mike Elias and genius sidekick Sig Mejdal, they would finally make them equals to the Yankees and the Red Sox by the strength of their brilliant minds and the power of their all-knowing algorithm.

Honestly, looking back at how the Orioles front office was discussed during their disgusting era of soul-sucking tanking, it's reminiscent of a cult. Like with any cult, they don't have the goods to come through on their promises. Some frauds can continue spinning yarn for decades on empty promises, but in sports there are real results that anyone can look up, and the results from this Orioles front office indicate clear as day that they failed. They were not as smart as they thought they were.

Trading Adley Rutschman is a scathing admission of failure that should not be tolerated

The worst part is that for a moment it looked as though all of their promises were going to come true. From the moment Adley Rutschman debuted in the major leagues, the team started winning. He helped carry them to their first winning record since 2016. It's not a coincidence that the Orioles' rise started with Rutschman. He is a rare player: an elite defensive catcher who calls good games and takes care of his pitching staff, and then, on offense, can hit at the top of the lineup from both sides of the plate. These kinds of players are more impactful than any stat can measure; Rutschman changed the Orioles completely from the moment he showed up. Even if he hasn't had Buster Posey's career, he still fulfilled what was expected of him when the Orioles took him with the number one pick in the 2019 draft.  

The front office failed to go all in when the team was one of the best in the league from 2023 to 2024. Over the last two seasons, their inability to develop or acquire pitching has made the team uncompetitive to the point where they are now trading their franchise savior within the division for prospects so they can start over.

This cannot be allowed to happen. This front office cannot be allowed to put the Orioles fanbase through one of the most embarrassing rebuilds in MLB history, fumble away their golden opportunity becuase of their pride, and then just say "oops" and start over again. How can this front office be trusted to execute another rebuild when their last one was as destructive and shameful as anyone had ever seen and resulted in zero playoff success?

The better future that Mike Elias promised Orioles fans for years is not going to come as long as he is the one in charge of Baseball Operations. He has been given enough time to prove himself, and all he has proven is that he is incapable of building a winning baseball team, even with a half-decade of top-5 picks and a new owner willing to spend almost $200 million annually on the payroll.

The Adley Rutschman trade is still yet to go through, but the most recent report per Buster Olney is that the prospects and medicals are set, and all that's left is for the Red Sox to say yay or nay. That means that from the Orioles side, they've agreed to trade Rutschman. They are fine once again kicking the can down the road.

They want to sell the fans that this season and next season don't matter becuase once again, a beautiful future baseball team is coming. Never mind that we said that before and it didn't happen. This time we really will be able to make the perfect future baseball team that never loses and wins forever. Believe us! Trust us! We're the smartest! Follow us, and one day you'll get that beautiful, perfect baseball team we promise.

If David Rubenstein cares about the Orioles at all, he'll clean house before the season ends. Unfortunately, he's under their spell and dreaming about future baseball teams right along with them.
