With the start of spring training, it's become clear that the Baltimore Orioles don't exactly have a plan for Coby Mayo. The offseason moves for Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward have squeezed Mayo out of a roster spot, and the Orioles trying him at different positions just feels like a way for them to waste time before finding a trade partner.

Recent reports have suggested the Orioles are continuing to explore potential trades involving Mayo and Ryan Mountcastle before Opening Day. In terms of maximizing trade value, trading Mayo would fetch the Orioles more than giving up on Mountcastle.

Mayo is only 24 years old and under team control through the 2031 season. Mayo flashed tremendous power during his ascent through the Orioles' farm system, and that likely will entice a team to take a chance on him as he seeks out an extended runway at the major league level.

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates have had an active offseason, but they have yet to address their need at third base. Their recent signing of Marcell Ozuna likely caps their spending for the offseason, but trading for Mayo would be a minimal financial hit, considering he doesn't hit arbitration until 2028. Pittsburgh's farm system is rich with pitching prospects, so this could be a creative way for the Orioles to address their looming long-term weakness.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers have had a curious offseason, and their recent trade of Caleb Durbin to the Boston Red Sox may have created more questions than answers. If the Brewers are planning on competing in 2026, one would think they would prefer a more established option than Luis Rengifo. Mayo would certainly check that box for Milwaukee, and similar to the Pirates, he wouldn't break their books.

Miami Marlins

It wouldn't be the first time that the Orioles have traded a blocked position player to the Marlins. Miami has been in the market for a first base upgrade this offseason and have yet to find one. Mayo would fit their desire for cost-controlled bats, and he would be a clear upgrade over Liam Hicks.
