The Baltimore Orioles have wrapped up camp and are on their way to cross the border to take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Many Orioles had an underwhelming spring, including some of the top prospects and major league roster members.
Entering 2025 the Orioles seemed confident that Heston Kjerstad would be getting a consistent stream of at-bats for the Major League club. While this was not the worst offensive spring the young outfielder could've had, it was far from inspiring. Fans should not be worried about Kjerstad come Thursday.
Kjerstad hit .209 this spring, which in the grand scheme of spring training baseball is far from horrible. The step that he was expected to take this spring never fully materialized. Kjerstad hit .253 in 2024 with four home runs. Once the regular season takes form Orioles' fans should expect Kjerstad's average to climb back up.
Kjerstad will be tasked with being a spark off the bench early in the season with Colton Cowser, Cedric Mullins, and Tyler O'Neill manning the outfield daily. If Mullins continues his woes from the spring into the regular season, Kjerstad may find his way into the lineup every day. Kjerstad is prepped to have a true breakout season when given the opportunity and fans should not dwell on the spring numbers.
Orioles fans shouldn't worry about these players who struggled during spring training
Seranthony Dominguez had a forgettable spring and while that can be a cause for concern, Dominguez is going to get opportunities in the back end of the bullpen. After coming to Baltimore from Philadelphia last season Dominguez saved 10 games and posted a 3.97 ERA.
While a frustrating spring for a reliever can cause questions about his reliability in the upcoming season, Dominguez had been a reliable reliever for many seasons in Philadelphia and proved his worth. With Felix Bautista making the Opening Day roster upon his return from injury, Dominguez will not be needed to handle as many high-pressure situations.
Gregory Soto and Yennier Cano will be tasked with the setup role to begin the 2025 season and will likely take some of the stress off of Dominguez as the season begins. If one of the pair struggles, Dominguez will be taking on higher-pressure situations. Fans should not be worried about the reliever's poor outings in spring training as he will return to form as the season rolls on.
Dean Kremer will be slotting into the Orioles rotation this season once again and while his spring was something to forget he should be prepared to take the ball and battle day in and day out for the Orioles this season. Kremer held a 7.27 ERA, giving up six home runs in five games in the spring and fans are correct to be slightly worried about the starter's performance.
Kremer had a good season a few years back and while he was never able to regain the success from that season, he has been a steady hand posting ERA's hovering around 4.10 in back-to-back seasons. Expect Kremer to return to the steady hand in the Orioles' rotation as they will need his help to stay afloat until the reinforcements arrive later down the stretch.
The Orioles have options if the trio of players are unable to shake the spring training bug. Baltimore would not want to use their emergency plan right away but should not be afraid if the issues persist. Fans should not fret as they are poised to break out of their respective funks and be productive members of the 2025 squad.
