Baltimore Orioles Drop Both Ends of Double Header (9/5/22)

The Orioles dropped two big games on Labor Day’s double header in Baltimore against the Toronto Blue Jays.  There are two games left in the series, and they are now must wins for the Birds.

The Orioles starting lineup in game one:

C. Mullins CF, 2. A. Rutschman C, 3. A. Santander RF, 4. R. Mountcastle 1B, 5. R. Urias 3B, 6. G. Henderson 2B, 7. J. Aguilar DH, 8. A. Hays LF, 9. J. Mateo SS
The starting pitcher was Mike Baumann (1-2, 4.50 ERA, 9 Strikeouts).

The Blue Jays starting lineup in game one:

G. Springer CF, 2. V. Guerrero Jr. 1B, 3. B. Bichette SS, 4. A. Kirk C, 5. T. Hernandez RF, 6. M. Chapman DH, 7. C. Biggio 2B, 8. L. Gurriel Jr. LF, 9. S. Espinal 3B
The starter was Kevin Gausman (10-9, 3.14 ERA, 164 Strikeouts).

Anthony Santander kicked the game off for Baltimore with a 414-foot home run (26) to give the O’s an early 1-0 lead.

Cavan Biggio hit an RBI single to score Matt Chapman to tie the game at 1-1.

Alejandro Kirk hit into a force out at second, but George Springer scored to give Toronto a 2-1 lead in the 3rd.  Gunnar Henderson fumbled the ball and failed to turn a double play, which would have ended the inning.

Baltimore Orioles lose both games in Labor Day doubleheader vs. Blue Jays

George Springer scored again in the 5th to make the lead 3-1 Toronto.

Joey Krehbiel (2.96 ERA) relieved Baumann in the 6th.  He pitched pretty well in his first MLB start and got little help from his defense.

Ryan Mountcastle hit an RBI double to score Adley Rutschman in the 6th to give the O’s hope and making the score 3-2.

Bryan Baker (4.09 ERA) came in with a runner on in the 7th.

Tim Mayza (2.87 ERA) entered for Toronto in the 7th.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a 415-foot home run (20) to extend the lead by one run to make it 4-2.

DL Hall (9.64 ERA) came in to pitch for Baltimore in the 8th.

Anthony Santander hit another 414-foot home run (27) in the 8th to make it 4-3 Toronto.  His two homers came from both sides of the plate.

Adam Climber (3.28 ERA) came in for the Blue Jays in the 8th.

George Springer singled to score Lourdes Gurriel. The Blue Jays began to ride the moment as Vladimir Guerrero hit a single to score Santiago Espinal followed up by a Bo Bichette single to score George Springer to make it 7-3.  Hall looked rough today and gave up lots of hard contact.

Beau Sulser (4.05 ERA) came in with 2 runners on in the 9th.

Zach Pop (3.38 ERA) came in for the Blue Birds to finish the first game.

Keegan Akin was the starter for today (3-1, 2.86 ERA, 66 Strikeouts).

The starter for the Blue Jays was Jose Berrios (9-5, 5.32 ERA, 127 Strikeouts).

Rougned Odor smacked a 412-foot home run (12) to give the O’s a 1-0 lead in the 2nd.

Nick Vespi (3.96 ERA) came in for the O’s in the 3rd with 2 runners on.  Jordan Lyles was scheduled to start but didn’t feel well, meaning the Brandon Hyde resorted to a bullpen game.

The reign of Bo Bichette started in the 3rd inning when he hit a 412-foot 3-run home run (19).

Bruce Zimmerman (5.85 ERA), called up between games, relieved Vespi in the 4th.

Bichette hit another home run (20) in the 6th. This one was a solo shot that soared 380-feet to extend Toronto’s lead to 4-1. Cavan Biggio a few batters later hit a solo 370-foot home run (6) to make it 5-1. Jackie Bradley Jr hit a 2-RBI double to continue the 6th inning bleeding and made it 7-1.

Bo Bichette hit a third home run for 420-foot and marked his 21st on the season.

Rougned Odor scored on a catcher’s interference call in the 7th to make it 8-2.

Trevor Richards (4.36 ERA) relived Berrios, who had a good outing for Toronto, with bases loaded.

Kyle Stowers scored in the bottom of the 7th to make it 8-3.

David Phelps (2.87 ERA) came in for Toronto in the 8th.

Julian Merryweather (6.38 ERA) came in for the Blue Jays to finish the game.

Adley Rutschman gave the O’s hope with a solo 419-foot home run (10) to make the final score 8-4 Toronto.

The series will continue tomorrow September 6th at 7:05 PM EST.
