The Baltimore Orioles slugged their way to a series sweep on Easter Sunday
On Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles hung 11 runs on their division rival Boston Red Sox, winning game three of this three-game season-opening series at Fenway Park in Boston. According to Roch Kubatko of MASN, the last time the Orioles had swept the Red Sox dates back to August 2017, which also occurred at Fenway Park.
The offensive leader for Baltimore on Sunday was undoubtedly Cedric Mullins. In 6 plate appearances, Mullins recorded 5 hits, including 3 doubles, along with reaching via walk. Mullins became just the sixth player since the beginning of the integration era (1947) to have such a performance, as well as the first Oriole to do so. On the season, Mullins is batting .692, which leads all of Major League Baseball through the first weekend of the season.
Trey Mancini, Rio Ruiz, and Anthony Santander each had multi-hit games on Sunday, with Santander recording 3 hits and a walk while Mancini and Ruiz each had 2 hits. The only hitter in Baltimore’s batting order without a hit was Freddy Galvis, although Galvis reached base twice by walk. In total, the Orioles posted 17 hits against Boston’s pitching staff on Sunday.
Bruce Zimmermann started just his second career MLB game on Sunday, earning his first big-league win. Zimmermann went 6 innings deep into the game, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 5 batters. The start also qualified as the first quality start of Zimmermann’s career.
In relief, Cole Sulser and Tyler Wells each logged a scoreless appearance on Sunday. Sulser worked the seventh and eighth innings, allowing just 1 hit and recording 3 strikeouts, while Wells took duties in the ninth, allowing a hit and a walk but hanging a zero to close out the game. The outing was Wells’ very first in the Major Leagues.
Up next on the Orioles’ schedule, the team will travel from Boston down into the Bronx to begin a three-game series with the New York Yankees on Monday. Jorge Lopez will be given the ball to start against Jordan Montgomery and the Yankees in what will be Baltimore’s first night game of the season. First-pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM ET.
