The Baltimore Orioles will have a chance for a mini two-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with Asher Wojciechowski on the mound Wednesday night.

It’s officially spoiler season for the Baltimore Orioles who have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for over a week.

This past weekend, Baltimore took two games from the Tampa Bay Rays who have since lost their lead to the Oakland A’s for the second American League wild card spot. Tuesday night, the Orioles won their second of three games against the Nationals this season with a 2-0 shutout victory.

With the loss, Washington’s lead on the top National League Wild Card spot dropped to three games with the Chicago Cubs defeating the New York Mets.

Wednesday the Orioles will have a chance to do what many probably thought was unthinkable and sweep aside a Nationals team who entered play Tuesday riding a five-game win streak.

In order to do so, the O’s will need a strong outing from Asher Wojciechowski. Wojciechowski has been up and down since joining the Orioles in July. The 30-year-old righty has pitched to a 4.67 ERA in 11 starts. Last time he took the ball, Wojciechowski pitched five innings of two-run ball against the Rays but did not earn a decision.

Not only will the Orioles need a strong outing from their starter, but they’ll need to find a way to hit three-time cy young award winner Max Scherzer. It will be the first time Baltimore has faced Scherzer this season as an injury kept him from making his scheduled start at Camden Yards back in June. Wednesday will be the future hall-of famers second start as he has been recovering from a lingering back injury.
