The Baltimore Orioles finished July .500. Thus, there’s plenty of positivity in our monthly awards.

July was by far the best month of the season so far for the Baltimore Orioles in 2019. The Orioles finished the month an even 12-12 as they grabbed series victories over the rival Red Sox, above .500 Angels and split the first half of the Beltway series with the Nationals.

With a .500 month of July, the Orioles improved their season win pace to 59. If they can maintain that pace, they would finish the season 12 games better than the 47-115 record they posted last season.

While 2019 is still very much a lost season for the Orioles the month of July was a good one. Thus we keep all awards positive as we recognize three deserving players for a strong first full month of summer.

Breakout Player: Renato Nunez

Renato Nunez has been a breakout player all season long for the Orioles due to his surprising power.

Entering 2019 his previous single-season home run high was eight in 2018. This season he has already hit 25. With so much power many may be wondering why Nunez is the breakout player of the month. It’s because of the fact he finally hit for average and on-base in July.

Nunez entered the month slashing .213/.300/.480. After a huge month of July, those numbers greatly improved. The breakout slugger slashed .304/.379/.576 and hit seven home runs on the month improving his season slash line to .252/.320/.504.

With a month where he was able to smack the ball over the field, Nunez is starting to prove he may just be more than a power hitter. If that’s the case, he very well may become the Orioles designated hitter of the future as the club moves closer towards contention.
