Cashner and Givens shipped up to Boston.

Our own Nick Stevens brainstormed the idea of sending Andrew Cashner to Boston, but what if the Orioles sent them both Cashner and a much-needed reliever in the same deal.

The O’s could send Cashner along with hard-throwing reliever Mychal Givens to Boston in exchange for a duo of prospects.

Though the Red Sox farm system is the worst in all of baseball, they do have some expandable pieces that could help the Orioles. In return for the two pitchers, Baltimore should for a pair of pitchers of their own.

One is reliever Bobby Poyner. The Red Sox 22nd ranked prospect has already pitched in three major league games meaning Baltimore could insert him into their bullpen immediately. Poyner struggled in his three outings with Boston this season but with Triple-A Pawtucket where he is currently pitching the lefty has posted a 3.34 ERA holding batters to a .219 batting average against.

The second arm the O’s should ask for is right-hander Bryan Mata. Mata is the Red Sox 7th ranked. The 20-year-old has struggled in his first two Double-A starts this season, but before his promotion, he pitched to a 1.75 ERA and held batters to a .201 batting average against for High-A Salem.

Getting two young arms in return for two veterans makes all the sense in the world and even though Boston is an AL East foe these two pitchers would make the deal worth it.
