The Baltimore Orioles pitching staff has been historically bad this season, and now they have a statistic no other team has ever posted.

The Baltimore Orioles pitching staff has posted a 5.93 ERA this season. This is over a half run higher than the Seattle Mariners who rank 29th at 5.27.

It was almost inevitable the Orioles would find themselves on the wrong side of baseball history with their poor pitching, but it was hard to imagine a record being shattered before the halfway point in the season.

Wednesday, the San Diego Padres, blasted five home runs out of Camden Yards in their 10-5 win over the Orioles. It was the 10th time Baltimore has given up five or more home runs in a game this season.

That is an MLB record as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out that the Orioles have surpassed the 2016 Reds for the most games in a single season with at least five home runs allowed.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde ripped into his pitching staff when talking to reporters after Wednesday’s loss saying “I think a little bit of it’s growing pains, a little bit of it’s poor execution, but when you have a team with a 6.00 ERA and you’ve given up 1400 homers so far, it’s hard to win games.”

In reality, Baltimore has given up 165 home runs, which is the most in baseball as the Mariners rank the second worst with 140 long balls allowed.

However, when balls are flying out of the yard at a historic pace in your team’s expense every night, it makes sense as to why Hyde feels the number is at 1,400.

Unfortunately for the 2019 Baltimore Orioles it doesn’t feel as if there’s any hope in righting the ship in the pitching department. They will have to continue to rely on relievers coming up and down from Norfolk as well as starters who have simply not gotten the job done.

Hyde will just have to throw whoever he has available out on the mound and hope for the best.
