Earlier today, the Baltimore Orioles announced their Minor Leaguers of the Month for May.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Orioles announced their minor league award winners for the month of May.  Delmarva Shorebirds LHP Drew Rom was named the Minor League Pitcher of the Month and Norfolk Tides OF DJ Stewart was named Minor League Player of the Month.

The 19-year-old Rom, 4th- round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 2018, started five games for the 44-14 Shorebirds and compiled a 3-0 record for the month.  Over a span of 25.2 innings, he pitched to an ERA of 0.35; he allowed just one earned run (a home run) the entire month while allowing 12 hits and eight walks.  He struck out 32 South Atlantic League batters while limiting them to a .135 batting average.  In fact, he pitched 24.1 consecutive scoreless innings in May before surrendering the home run to Greenville’s (Boston Red Sox affiliate) Triston Casas on May 30th.

Rom was also recently named to the South Atlantic League North All-Star team.

DJ Stewart, the Baltimore Orioles 2015 1st round draft pick, was called up to Baltimore on May 28th, after he appeared in 19 games for the Tides and slashed .456/ .512/ .882/ 1.395 in 68 at-bats.  He scored 15 runs while hitting 10 doubles, two triples and five home runs among his 31 total hits, with 27 RBI.  Stewart took 10 walks, struck out 10 times and stole one base as well.  He was in the midst of a five-game hitting streak when he was called up and also produced a six-game hitting streak during the month (5/12-5/19).

Since his call-up to the big leagues, DJ Stewart is 4-24 (.167 average) with a stolen base in seven games. He was injured during Wednesday’s contest against the Texas Rangers and diagnosed with a sprained ankle. He is not expected to miss much time, according to manager Brandon Hyde.
