The Baltimore Orioles top prospect has taken Triple-A by storm. Will he get called up to the big league squad this season?

In a lost season perhaps the most excitement generated around the Baltimore Orioles comes when young players get their chance in the big leagues.

The Orioles 15th ranked prospect DJ Stewart who was called up Tuesday already has fans buzzing and excited to see what he is capable of. However, the prospect who would generate the most excitement of any if he were to get the call is Ryan Mountcastle.

Mountcastle was chosen by the Orioles in the first round of the MLB Draft and has raked his way through the minor league pipeline ever since. The 22-year-old is the O’s top-ranked prospect according to MLB.com and ranks 63rd overall.

With Tripple A Norfolk this season Mountcastle has posted excellent numbers. The first basemen is batting .326 entering play Thursday with 33 RBI’s and seven home runs in 43 games.

Though he is currently sidelined with a sore left wrist, Mountcastle is expected back as soon as this weekend to continue his quest to reach the big leagues.

The question is not if but when he will reach his goal. For all Orioles fans, the hope is this season; however, it may not be that easy for the O’s to make room for him on the roster.

Mountcastle is not a member of the Baltimore Orioles 40-man roster thus unless someone were to be placed on the 60-day injured list the O’s would have to cut ties with someone to clear room for the 22-year-old.

In addition the first base position is currently clogged by the hefty contract of Chris Davis and the O’s top player Trey Mancini. Though Mancini can move to the outfield, the Orioles have no choice but to find Davis and his big paycheck time to play. Thus, this makes things more complicated for Mountcastle.

In a lost season, one can only hope the Orioles find a way to get their top prospect on the roster.
