Lost in the shuffle of the Baltimore Orioles signings at the Trade Deadline, Mark Trumbo has landed on the disabled list.

The Baltimore Orioles designated hitter and occasional outfielder has a rib cage strain. He is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.

Trumbo missed Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers when he was scratched late after reporting upper body pain to Buck Showalter. He is now on the 10-day DL according to the team and reported by The Baltimore Sun‘s Chris Meoli.

The 31-year-old right-handed All-Star hasn’t been hitting anywhere near his 2016 numbers, but he has played in every game in 2017. He is batting .238/.300/.405 with a .706 OPS. His career average is .250 and is career OBP is .303, so he’s close – but not quite there. He’s gone yard 17 times this year, which is much closer to his season averages than the 47 he hit in 2016.

Despite the fact that no one wants a big hitter on the DL, his timing did help the team. Putting Trumbo on the DL opened up a spot for Jeremy Hellickson. The O’s will need to make a move to add Tim Beckham. That could be Ruben Tejada as Johnny Giavotella is more useful around the diamond that Tejada is. Craig Gentry was called up and can help out in the outfield, but he too could be sent back down.

With Trumbo out of the lineup for at least 10-days, Trey Mancini will most likely see more time as the designated hitter. With his batting average hovering right around the .300 mark and with the 17 home runs, he will do just fine in Trumbo’s place. This, however, does put a little more stress on the outfielders. But, the Orioles recently called up Craig Gentry at the end of the month when Hyun Soo Kim was traded.

When hitters like Trumbo end up on the DL, other players often pick up the slack. So, fans could get to see more from Manny Machado, Chris Davis, and other players who need to add to their stats.

It looks like the Orioles will be ok for the remaining days of Trumbo’s time on the disabled list.
