The Baltimore Orioles had an inconsistent series against the White Sox, but at least they pulled out a pair of wins in the Windy City.
The Baltimore Orioles‘ recent series against the Chicago White Sox was a true mixed bag, complete with intense pitchers’ duels, a bullpen meltdown and a decisive victory to complete the slate. In the end, the Birds took two out of four games to move to 16-34 on the season.
A split series might not sound so bad for a team that arrived in the Windy City on a 1-15 road skid, but the White Sox, currently in the throes of a full-scale rebuild, have one of the most barren rosters in the league. The fact that they outscored the Orioles by a 19-15 margin says a lot about the Birds’ current state.
That’s not to say that the O’s didn’t experience their share of positives — Adam Jones displayed some power, Manny Machado remains one of the game’s top trade targets and young starters Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy both enjoyed strong outings. But while the Birds have talented players, we’re constantly reminded that the finished product isn’t anything close to a contending team. Fans must learn to appreciate the small victories, because the big picture isn’t anything to look twice at.
The Birds will try to finish their road trip on a high note when they play the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. The series is set to get underway on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Until then, here are three takeaways from the White Sox series.
