The Baltimore Orioles became the first team in MLB history to hit four home runs before recording an out, yet their pitching failed them and they fell 15-8.

The Baltimore Orioles made history last night by becoming the first team in MLB history to smack four home runs before recording an out in the first inning. One would think that might set the tone for the game, and for a period it actually did. However starter Wade MIley fell apart early – which also in essence set a tone. Miley’s line: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 5 K.

If you’re Miley, this can’t be how you wanted to come to your new team – with your fourth straight loss. MIley surrendered an early homer to Houston’s Springer before the Birds even took the field. But then as I said they made some history that’s never before been seen in MLB.

Adam Jones sent the first pitch of the last of the first over the wall, which was followed later in the inning by a two-run homer by Manny Machado. After that Chris Davis decided that it would be fitting for the Orioles to go back-to-back, and smacked a solo homer of his own. And for good measure, Mark Trumbo sent a fourth one over the wall to make MLB history, and to give the Birds a 5-1 lead.

  • At that point it appeared the Orioles were off to the races. However Houston dipped and dunked their way onto base in the second inning, and before you knew it they had put a five-spot of their own on the board and taken a 6-5 lead. However the O’s battled back with an RBI-single by Schoop in the third, and then Wieters scored on a wild pitch. So needless to say they got the lead back…

…for that moment, that is. Houston was hell bent on winning last night’s game. Pedro Alvarez would add one more home run for the Birds, however when we came to game’s end Houston had totaled 15 runs. To the Orioles’ eight, that is. Usually when you produce eight runs you’re in good shape to win. But more so when you give up 15 you’re in good shape to lose.

So as opposed to the rightful story being how the Orioles made history last night, the story is about the lack of pitching and how most of their runs come off of homers. Houston put up their share of home runs also, but they’re a small ball team. Apparently they can put runs up every which way.

As we saw on Thursday night, crooked games like this happen. You just have to come back to the ballpark the next night and move on. And that’s true after a win and a loss. Yesterday’s game means nothing, regardless of how good or bad it was. Today’s game is the most important of the season – and that’s true in spring training, the regular season, or the playoffs.

The series continues this evening at Camden Yards. Chris Tillman will be on the mound for the Orioles (after being pushed back due to injury concerns earlier in the week), and he’ll be opposed by Houston’s Mike Fiers. Game time is set for just after 7 PM.
