Mike Wright battled as hard as he could, but he couldn’t save the Baltimore Orioles from being defeated by Toronto yesterday afternoon.

After yesterday’s game, Mike Wright himself freely admitted that his mechanics were off – and in fact, that seemed to set the tone for the Baltimore Orioles. If success or failure begins and ends with starting pitching, well…it begins and ends with starting pitching. Wright’s line: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 3 K.

However Wright also battled hard in the five innings he was in the game. He may well have been battling himelf, but he battled. The effort was there, and that was evident. What’s not evident is how much longer Wright will remain in the Orioles’ rotation or on the Orioles at all. He was sent to the minors once, and was recalled almost immediately when O’Day was hurt. With Gallardo about to come of the DL, will he continue to stay in Baltimore?

Goins’ RBI-triple in the second inning gave Toronto the lead on Wright and the O’s. One inning later Encarnacion would add an RBI-double, and Saunders a sac fly-RBI. Encarnacion was struggling coming into this series, but he’s seeminly found his stroke now against Oriole pitching.

  • But the O’s put up a fight. Rickart’s solo homer in the fourth got the Birds on the board, and suddenly it was tied after Chris Davis hit another home run – this one of the two-run variety. Two innings later the Orioles had a brief lead for Wright on Machado’s solo homer.

However at the end of the day, the pitching just wasn’t there for the Orioles on this day. And mind you, this wasn’t just Wright’s fault. Two sac fly-RBI in the last of the sixth gave Toronto the lead back, and then Encarnacion teed off on a McFarland pitch which ended up as a three-run homer. And McFarland freely admitted after the game that he didn’t pitch well yesterday. There were no excuses made.

The O’s would find a way to add two more, however a second homer by Encarnacion and one by Saunders ran the score to 10-6. Now keep in mind that these O’s are going to win most of the games in which they put up six runs. However Encarnacion’s torched them the past two games. At the end of the day sometimes that does happen.

The Birds will try to settle for a four-game split if they’re able to win this afternoon’s series finale. Ubaldo Jimenez will get the ball for the O’s, and he’ll be opposed by Toronto’s Aaron Sanchez. Game time is set for just after 1 PM.
