Baltimore Orioles, Mike Wright drop finale with Boston

facebooktwitterreddit

The Baltimore Orioles are testing out guys such as Mike Wright in the starting rotation right now. That audition will presumably continue next year in spring training, however Wright was unable to show much in last night’s loss to Boston. Wright’s line: 3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K.

Wright was consistently in the middle of the plate against Boston hitters, which is going to haunt you every time – no matter who you’re playing. As can often happen, he also had this outing on a night when Boston was seeing and hitting the ball very well. As we’ve seen with the Orioles at times, in some games you’re just zeroed in. Boston was in that zone last night against Wright.

A second inning solo homer off the bat of “Big Papi” Ortiz got things going for the BoSox. One inning later Holt’s RBI-single and Pedroia’s two-run homer gave Boston a 4-0 lead. The fourth inning brought two RBI-singles off of Boston hitters, and then Pedroia’s second homer of the night – this one of the three-run variety.

So after four the Orioles trailed 9-0. That’s not exactly what you look for when you still have an outside shot at the post season. However as I said, we all know that games like this do happen over the course of 162. And the fact is that you can’t cry over spilled milk, you just have to move onto the next game. Boston would add an RBI-single in the eighth, and the Orioles’ lone run of the night would come on an RBI-groundout in the ninth off the bat of Steve Pearce

As I said, Wright is probably getting a hard look in terms of having a shot at the rotation next year. If I know the Orioles, they’ll continue that look come spring training next March. So Wright will continue to get his shot, but he also will want to minimize the number of outings as he had last night in the process. This has also been a tough year for him in the sense that he started out with a lot of promise, and then found himself on the DL. So I know that the Orioles are hoping that perhaps a few months off in the off season will help to get him back to where he needs to be.

The O’s now head out on the road for a ten-game road trip that begins tonight in Tampa. Chris Tillman will be on the mound tonight for the Birds at Tropicana Field. He’ll e opposed by Tampa’s Matt Moore. Game time is set for just after 7 PM.
