Orioles' owner on the passing of Paul Blair

Majority owner Peter Angelos has released the following statement regarding the death of Baltimore Orioles’ great Paul Blair:

“It is with great sadness that we learned of Paul Blair’s passing last evening. Paul was a key member of many of the Orioles’ most memorable and successful teams, as his contributions at the plate and his Gold Glove defense in center field helped the club to two World Series and four AL pennants. After his on-field career, Paul made the Baltimore area his home and stayed involved with the organization through his appearances in the community and at the ballpark. On behalf of the Orioles I extend my condolences to his wife, Gloria, and his family.”

When I first started going to O’s games Paul Blair was the center fielder. The thing I remember most about him was the amazing break he got on the ball. In all the games I saw him play what always amazed me was that when the ball was hit to center all you saw when you looked up was the back of his uniform. He had the ability to run to a spot and then turn and wait for the ball. I never saw him make the amazing catches that you see now because he broke on the ball so well he made everything look easy. I’m sure I’m partial but he was the best I ever saw.
