What should Santa bring the Orioles?

Let’s keep this brief this morning, given the fact that it’s Christmas. So with that said…first and foremost I’d like to wish all of Birdland a very Merry Christmas this morning! I hope that Santa was good to all fans of the Baltimore Orioles who read this column (and even those who don’t!). So what can fans hope might have been stashed under Dan Duquette’s tree this morning? Speaking for myself, I’d say a front-line starting pitcher. And incidentally, that supersedes the need for a closer or anything else. I see starting pitching as the single biggest issue with the O’s right now. If they can find a top-line starter to compliment Chris Tillman, they’ll be in business.

I also mentioned the closer role above, and that’s something that will either be addressed in house or by Tommy Hunter presumably. However what about left field? Nolan Reimold appears to be getting another shot at that, possibly combined with David Lough (for whom they recently traded). Would the Orioles be better off if they had someone such as Nelson Cruz? Without a doubt. However hypothetically speaking if the Orioles only have one bullet to spend I think it should be on a front-line pitcher. And let’s not forget that some of these things could happen in the form of trades.

All of that aside, once again I hope that Orioles fans far and wide enjoy their Christmas today, as well as the entire holiday season as we move through it.

I’d like to start by wishing all O’s fans a Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. Now I could be naive but I like our club going into next season. The player we’ll miss most is Johnson unless we sign someone before the season begins. Tommy Hunter is tough and can dominate but still tends to give up way too many HRs. I think we already have the hitter everyone says we need. He plays right field and has for the past 8 seasons. I expect Markakis to bounce back better than ever next year. As far as starting pitching goes, once Bundy is ready I think we’ll have a formidable staff of Tillman, Gausman, Norris, Gonzalez, Chen and Bundy. I know that is six and you only use five but that will work itself out. I also believe Flaherty will have a very solid year at second base. So lets not get too upset about our lack of moves this off season. My biggest concern next year is lack of team speed. With McLouth and B-Rob gone there are not going to be many stolen bases next year.

Merry Christmas to you also Dave! I think the thing that the O’s like about Hunter is that he’s a strikeout guy also. That’s probably what teams look for in a closer. Johnson was great for a time, but he was also a guy that had the ball put in play a lot. I still think they might make a move as opposed to using Hunter as the closer, but time will tell. Thanks for reading!
