Last week I suggested that people take rumors with a grain of salt. Luckily this isn’t any longer just a rumor; the Baltimore Orioles have filled a vacancy in their bullpen, signing free agent closer Grant Balfour this afternoon. Balfour,
formerly of the Oakland A’s, signed for two years $14 million with the O’s, who will slide him directly into Jim Johnson’s old slot. Over the last two seasons as a closer, Balfour’s saved 62 games with a 2.56 ERA while holding opponents to a .182 batting average. He’s also averaged 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings, although for the record he’s only been a closer for the past two years (since age 33). The deal hasn’t officially been announced as it’s pending a physical, however that aside it’s a done deal.
