Baltimore Orioles: Is today the day?

News about the Baltimore Orioles has been trickling in like drops of water during a drought for the past couple of days (if you discount rumors such as Lance Berkman coming to Baltimore). So this is going to be a very brief column this morning. Mainly I’m musing about whether or not today will be the day that the Orioles announce that they’ve extended manager Buck Showalter. It’s no secret that Showalter will be getting an extension, and word on the street is that it’s going to be in the range of three years.

Showalter was in Baltimore last week discussing an extension with Dan Duquette and Orioles’ majority owner Peter Angelos, and it appeared that things were on track to have the extension announced as early as this week. This week has now arrived, so again…is today the day?

With Orioles’ FanFest less than two weeks away, the Orioles announced that gold glove shortstop J.J. Hardy will not be in attendance due to a prior family commitment that was scheduled well before the Orioles announced the date of FanFest. In short, his sister’s getting married that day. I suppose the fans will give him a pass on that one!
