The Baltimore Orioles made their first external move of the 2012-13 off season today when they aquired first baseman Danny Valencia from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. Valencia only played in ten games for the Red Sox in 2012, and previously was a member of the Minnesota Twins (who drafted him). For his career, Valencia is a .257 hitter with a .297 OBP. He’s hit 25 homers and 133 RBI, while drawing 63 career walks. Could Valencia be the link that the Orioles have been missing at first base? I’ll take a look at the trade a bit more in depth in tomorrow’s column. To make room for Valencia on the 40-man roster, the Orioles had to designate first baseman Joe Mahoney for assignment.
