CF Prospect Michael Planeta Makes Keys Debut

Frederick, MD

The Keys lost to the Lynchburg Hillcats 1-0 Friday, but it was no thanks to Michael Planeta, who made his Carolina League debut. Frederick outfielder Trent Mummey was placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. The same injury that caused him to miss most of the 2011 season.

“I was surprised and definitely relieved,” Planeta said about getting the call to Frederick. “”I was ready to come up.”

Planeta, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round in 2009, doubled to right field in the third inning off Lynchburg starter Aaron Northcraft.  He said he found out roughly a half an hour after the game with Delmarva and instantly called his mother Margaret.

“It was about a second and a half and she started to tear up,” Planeta said.  ”She is a super fan and really caring and I love it.”

The native of Surprise, Arizona hit .367/.486/.567 with a homer and five RBI in nine games with Delmarva.  Planeta takes pride in his all-around performance on the field.   He has speed and can hit for contact.

“I just hope I can bring a lot to the team and help them win,” said a happy Planeta.

Frederick continues their series with the Lynchburg Hillcats Saturday as Kyle Simon takes the hill for Frederick in the hopes of evening up the series.
