O’s Soar as Bell Scuffles

The Orioles run of improved play under the tutelage of Buck Showalter continued with yesterday’s 4-3 win over the White Sox. Lost in the bliss of this past week are the struggles of rookie 3rd baseman Josh Bell. The O’s dealt Miguel Tejada to the Padres to clear a spot in the lineup for Bell. After hitting 13 bombs for the Norfolk Tides Bell has been given a chance to solidify a spot in the O’s 2011 lineup. So far, albeit in a small sample size, he’s flopped. On the surface Bell’s .182 average and one extra base hit in 44 ABs is nothing to write home about, but also no reason to panic. However, if you look a bit deeper you’ll see that the youngster has racked up an alarming 17 strikeouts to 0 walks. Thus far Bell has made Adam Jones look like Kevin Youkilis. Bell’s striking lack of plate discipline likely signals a need for more minor league development time. Barring a major turnaround in Bell’s approach over the next 6 weeks the Orioles will once again be in the market for a 3rd baseman this Winter.
