The Orioles signed veteran Will Ohman to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. A few weeks ago the Orioles watched Ohman throw a bullpen session in Arizona and must have been impressed. Ohman, 32, went 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA in 21 relief appearances last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He’s trying to prove himself healthy after coming off of elbow and shoulder surgeries. The signing should put extra pressure on Wilfrido Perez, Alberto Castillo, and non-roster invitee Mike Hinckle to earn a spot in the bullpen. The O’s were targeting Ohman last season until he signed with the Dodgers.
Ohman is viewed as a situational lefty, something the team desperately lacks in the bullpen. He’s made 324 career appearances in the majors and has held lefties to a .204 batting average. If he is able to stay healthy, he may become a nice addition the bullpen.
