Matt Wieters is first up on the list for covering the bases. Wieters is a big switch-hitting catcher standing in at 6′5 and only 23 years old who has potential of becoming a future super-star. Some people are even going as far to say that Wieters will be on the same level as Joe Mauer. We drafted Wieters 5th overall in the 2007 draft and I’m sure the Pirate fans are still regretting that the organization skipped over him for ‘financial reasons’.
Wieters played college ball at Georgia Tech, where he is one of just three players in Georgia Tech history [...]

Covering the Bases: Matt Wieters
Covering the Bases
As most of us know, these next few weeks or even months will probably be slow in Orioles news. So over the next weeks, I’ll do a little bio for all the starters on the team and including the pitchers. With that being said, I’ll probably skip over first base for now until the starting first baseman becomes clearer.
Depending on the time I have, and how long it takes to complete the starters I may try to do a little bio for the entire 25-man roster. It will be interesting digging into the player’s strengths and weakness, how the players [...]
The O’s finally made the Atkins signing official. He signed a one year deal worth 4.5 million with a team option. If the Orioles decide to pick up his option for the 2011 season, Atkins will be paid 8.5. Atkins also has 500,000 dollars worth of incentives in his contract.
“We do feel like we have young kids at first and third,” said MacPhail. “Anyone that required a long-term commitment was something that wasn’t ideal for us. Here we had the opportunity, in our view, to take a little bit of a risk on a guy that was one of the [...]
Taking Care of Needs
Last night news broke that the O’s will be signing Reliever Mike Gonzalez and third baseman Garrett Atkins. So far this off-season, everything has been moving very slow, but in just one evening we fill two very crucial team vacancies. Andy MachPhail’s play the market out approach has once again worked in our favor.
According to a lot of local sources, the O’s will be giving Gonzalez a two year deal with worth $12 million and possible another additional $4 million in incentive clauses. Although Boras usually gets his players overpaid, I believe the O’s came away with a very respectable [...]
Holliday for the Holidays?
Fox Sports reported today that the Orioles are jumping into the bid for Matt Holliday. With the jam in right-field I wouldn’t have thought the Orioles would target Holliday.
Signing Holliday would greatly improve the team, but we would have some concerns. One for instance would be, what happen with Reimold.
I’m not going to spend a lot time on this, because it’s an extreme long for Holliday to sign with a team like the Orioles. But if he did, I don’t think I’d be willing to trade away Reimold. I would rather trade Scott, move Remiold to first-base, and put Atkins at [...]
O’s Trade Ray for Millwood
The Orioles made a semi-minor trade today acquiring Rangers pitcher Kevin Millwood. In return for Millwood, the Rangers received Chris Ray and PTBNL. The player to be named later will not even come from our organization, so it won’t affect our major or minor league roster.
At first I was against this trade, but now I’m starting to understand and liking the deal. Millwood is a veteran pitcher that’s proven he can win. As we all know, the past few seasons our bullpen has gotten worn down extremely early in the season due to the pitchers consistently got knocked out early [...]
Trip to the Babe Ruth Museum
Yesterday was an interesting day for me as I finally got the chance to head over to the Babe Ruth Museum. I know that we as Baltimoreans tend forget about a lot of the wonderful local attractions in our city. Which is understandable, especially this time of year with the high electric bills
The feeling of standing in front of the house that Babe Ruth was born and grew up in felt so surreal. Once you pay your relatively cheap admission; you’re able to start walking through the house and feel the environment that he grew up in. I remember visiting [...]
