The Orioles lost three players today, Rich Hill, Jeff Fiorentino, and Guillermo Rodriguez. All three decided to refuse an outright assignment to triple-A Norfolk, instead will file for free-agency. The Orioles decided not to put them on the 40 man roster, but elected to send them to Norfolk after they cleared waivers. The three had different feelings though, and decided to try and catch on with another club. Well, maybe.
I can’t help but not care too much about this news, other than I’m a little on the content side. Rich Hill could not stay healthy, could not find his control, and could not win us games. Simply put, he was a waste of a roster spot for a good part of the season. I had some hope when we traded for him, but all was lost by his second start. He seemed like a nice guy, our experiment with him failed, and I wish him luck.
As for Jeff Fiorentino I will miss him to an extent. He was a hard working guy, and did well down the final stretch of the season for the O’s. I’m sure he’ll land somewhere else, maybe even before Hill. I wouldn’t actually be surprised if he signs back with the O’s if no other team is willing to put him on the 40 man roster. For Guillermo Rodriguez, I won’t lose any sleep over it as he will be easily replaced. I have a feeling that the Blue Jays will be on the phone a lot the next few days with these guy’s agents.
