The Orioles announced yesterday what managers will be returning for next season. Well, everybody is but bench coach Dave Jauss. First off, I have to admit that I’m a little surprised that Jauss was the only coach to be let go. Juan Samuel did a poor job as third-base coach last season, to put it nicely. He made a lot of crucial mistakes in bang-bang situations. On the flip side, he helped out Reimold a great deal in left field, at least he did something.
Trembley noted that he is in no rush to find somebody to take over the vacant bench coach position. He also added that none of the current coaches will fill the role. You know that Tremble and the entire organization will be looking for somebody who is an ex manager in the majors. If MacPhail is true to his word about next season, we will need somebody who also has playoff experience.
Our coaching staff has at least one person who can help a player at each position, but catcher. And with our future riding on Wieters, I have a feeling we will be adding catching knowledge to the criteria.
So, let’s break this down. We are looking for an ex manager, loyalty, knows how to win, catching knowledge, and will be liked around the clubhouse. I have to admit, I can’t think of anybody better than Rick Dempsey to become the bench coach. We’ll just have to wait and see who Trembley will pick; I just hope he makes the correct decision.
