At the beginning of the season everybody was stealing on us nonstop. Thankfully, when Wieters was called up that statistic started to change. With all the hype around him and scouts raving about how accurate and strong Wieters arm is, you can understand why base runners are hesitant to try an steal on him. The Tigers challenged Wieters during his first game in a Orioles uniform leading off the game with a bunt. After Wieters got the runner out first, the Tigers and rest the league learned he’s for real.
The Mets are 3rd in the MLB in stolen bases, so Wieters will probably get tested more this upcoming series. Wieters has been our starting catcher eleven times (96 innings) so far this season, and four men attempted to steal on him. Out of the four attempts, Wieters has only thrown out one.
Zaun who started behind the plate most of the season has recorded 329 innings behind the plate this season and 26 attempted steals against him. We all know that Zaun has a horrible arm, and only got 8 out of the 26 attempted steals. Moeller, who is now in Norfolk had 128 innings innings behind the plate this season in a O’s uniform, he’s only thrown out 1 guy out of 12 attempts. With these statistic, thank god for Wieters to control the run game.
