I’m told that pitchers Troy Patton and Jake Arrieta are, indeed, moving up to Triple-A Norfolk, where they’ll join elite prospect Chris Tillman in a beefed-up rotation.
I guess there’s still room for someone else once the Orioles activate Koji Uehara, but it just got a lot more crowded down there.
Wow, I was not expecting Arrieta to be called up just yet, however, this is great news. Arrieta and Patton both don’t have anything else to prove in double-A whose pitching staff just got a lot weaker. I doubt for long though because I’m sure Matusz will be called up to Bowie soon. All of our young pitchers have been progressing very nice and making big strides to reach the majors before years end. The Tides rotation will currently consists of Tillman, Patton, and Arrieta. Now that is a dominate force, to bad they don’t have a lot of hitters to add with it.
Out of the three, I would say Patton has the best chance of being called up first, although, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Tillman. The question I have now is what’s going to happen to Guthrie. These moves were announced the day after he took another loss and keeps getting his pitches hit out the yard. Even though Guts is slumping, he still has value on the market. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start hearing trade rumors involving Guts soon, especially as the all-star break approaches. Maybe I’m just jumping the gun here a little bit and they waited to make these moves until after the draft, but it’s a consideration.

And Hernandez got sent down. So, what? We have Arrieta, Tillman, Hernandez, Patton and Waters all starting? That’s as good a 5 as you’ll see in the IL, I think.
