The Orioles announced today that they have traded Ryan Freel to the Cubs, for Joey Gathright. We all knew this was coming sooner rather than later, as Freel has been mentioning his displeasure for a while. It was also no surprise that we traded him to the Cubs. What does this make, the third trade with the cubs this year?
I seriously doubt Gathright will ever reach the majors with the Orioles. He’s a speedster, and a little better at the plate than Pie, but a lot less upside. In addition to sending Freel, the O’s also had to send a large sum of money to even out the deal. We have such depth in the field, Freel had no place to fit in. At least with Gathright, he knows he most likely won’t reach the majors.
So, now we got one open roster spot, who will be called up? My best bet will be a reliever since it looks like Sarfate will be out at least a month, which is good news considering it could of been career ending.
