Down On The Farm: 5/7-5/8

I was just looking over some minor league stats in the Orioles’ system for yesterday and tonight, and some performances have just been great.  Although the big club was blanked for 9 innings by C.C. Sabathia tonight, the affiliates have been great as of late.

May 7th

  • Ryan O’Shea, RH SP, Delmarva: 7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks
  • Troy Patton, LH SP, Bowie: 6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 Ks
  • Chris Tillman, RH SP, Norfolk: 6 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks
  • Pat Eagan, RH RP, Delmarva: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 K-2 perfect innings of relief
  • Xavier Avery, OF, Delmarva:  3-4, 2 3B, 2 R, 1 SB
  • Billy Rowell, 3B-RF, Frederick: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB
  • Joe Mahoney, 1B, Delmarva: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB

A note about Mahoney: He’s known as a power hitter, with a 6′7″, 255 lbs. frame, but he’s hitting .384 with a .408 OBP, and has stolen 8 bases this season.  Keep this guy on your radar.  Last year he had a lot of trouble hitting for a high average, but managed to hit 7 dingers and drive in 61 runs last year in 95 games in Delmarva.  Mahoney and Brandon Snyder are two first basemen in the system who could end up being good contributors in the major leagues.

May 8th

  • Brian Matusz, LH SP, Frederick: 7 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 13 Ks!!!!! AND THE LOSS!!!
  • Ronnie Welty, OF, Delmarva: 3-4, R, RBI
  • L.J. Hoes, 2B/OF, Delmarva: 1-3, 2 RBI
  • Dave Krynzel, OF, Bowie: 3-4, OF Assist
  • Eddie Gamboa, RH RP, Delmarva: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 Ks, Hold, Win

Note: Mahoney added his 9th steal tonight.  He could be on pace to set the record for 1B in the O’s system, which I will have to look up.  It can’t be too high.
